Tim & Billy Jean

In 1981, my older and only brother Tim suffered a massive head injury when he was 22 years old. He was a passenger in a car with four friends. The driver fumbling for a cassette tape, hit a bridge railing. The car was impaled by the railing. Then the railing impaled my brother. Tim was the only one injured. These injuries to his head were so vast, that neurosurgeons removed almost half of his left-brain, leaving little optimism for life.

For twenty-three years later, he loved and laughed, leaving the neurosurgeons baffled and impressed. After reconstructive surgeries, and years of debilitating effects Tim lived back in the home in which we grew up in Iowa, and was cared for by my amazing parents.

Inspiration for my life and art flows directly from Tim. Tim was a born creator and became an Artist. He was attending Cal Arts for his master's degree when the accident happened. The following reproductions of Tim's work before his head injuries reflect his promising Art career and installation work. Most of the line drawings here were done post-trauma. Without the use of his left brain, breaking down his ability to function with his right side, Tim continued to make Art using his left hand.

Loaded with innovation and charisma,
Tim gathered towards himself a large and dynamic circle of friends and
admirers. Since the accident, most have faded out of sight.
